Five Card Draw Poker Rules: Overview
Five Card Draw is a popular variation of poker in home games and also features as one of the options of the OnGame poker rooms, including PokerRoom, Hollywood Poker and Euro Poker. Five Card Draw is unlike any of the other online poker games in that players are given the choice of changing any quantity of their five cards. This is called the draw. Players may also choose not to draw any cards, or stand 'pat.'
If more than one player remains in the game when the betting is finished, the game enters a showdown phase. The player with the best high hand wins the pot.
The blinds are mandatory bets posted by two players at the start of each hand, prior to the cards being dealt. The player directly to the left of the dealer posts the small blind, which in a Fixed Limit game is half the small stake, rounded down to the nearest dollar (for example, in a $10 / $5 game, the small blind is $2). In Pot Limit and No Limit games, the small blind is equal to the small stake ($5 in a $10 / $5 limit game). The player to the left of the small-blind player posts the big blind, which in a Fixed Limit game is equal to the small stake ($5). In Pot Limit and No Limit games, the big blind is equal to the big stake ($10).
In Five Card Draw, each player in turn plays as the dealer. At the table we represent the dealer position with:
Dealer Button: The Button is a graphic symbol that represents the theoretical dealer. After each hand, the button moves clockwise to the next active player, who becomes the dealer for that hand. This player is considered to be 'on the button', and is the last person to act in the betting round. The first player to the left of the button is the first player to be dealt cards, the first player to act in each betting round and the player that posts the small blind.
